What is Shakti?

Shakti is a Sanskrit term for the ‘Dynamic cosmic energy that moves throughout the entire universe”. Shakti is the energy force that existed to create the moment of the big bang, a massive explosion of potential energy that carried with it all that was needed to create the planets, stars, and eventually even us.

If you’ve ever heard someone say “we are made of stardust”, they mean it literally. Everything that makes our atomic structure was originally ‘stardust’. All of the carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen building blocks (to name a few), were set into motion across the universe at the moment of the big bang. Us humans being ‘Made of Stardust’ is not just a metaphor.

So if what we are is a math equation using the periodic table of elements, Shakti is similar to the western concept of our soul. It’s the life force that sparks personality and individual creativity. We feel it’s presence when we experience love and joy, when we are creating something artistically or musically, in the moments when we come up with a clever solution to a problem at work or at home, or when we hit a homerun or finish first in a race.

Our Shakti is flowing when our gut intuition tells us exactly what to do or where to be, when we are out on a hike and the view from the hill takes our breath away, when you run into a stranger who you feel like you’ve known forever. It’s that warmth in your chest or belly, and the mental feeling of being completely in sync with the universe.

When Shakti is blocked we feel fear, sadness, stress, worry… We feel disconnected from the world and all the people around us. Inside the body things feel dull, and the world almost appears more dark and gloomy. It’s not a fun place to be.

(I also want to be clear that this isn’t a contest, we all go through periods of time where our energy gets blocked, and having constantly flowing Shakti is not a prerequisite for being “good” in any way, and having blocked energy does not make you less than. Everyone goes through ups and downs, and trying to maintain high energy at every moment of your life is more likely to lead to emotional repression.)

So What is a Shakti Massage?

At Remedy, the Shakti Massage session combines guided meditation, traditional bodywork, polarity energy work techniques, quartz crystals, chakra and aura cleansing to work on the physical body, emotional body, and energetic body.

During intake we talk about your experience with energy work, and what current life stresses you are dealing with physically and mentally to create a customized session. The form of guided meditation varies for the client’s needs, as well as the physical bodywork and energetic work.

Have you been feeling like you need to stand your ground and speak up for yourself? More focused throat and 3rd chakra work can help give you that firm foundation for boundaries and voice to speak them. Feeling isolated and disconnected? Opening the heart and 3rd eye chakras will help bring in the support you need in both the physical and spiritual realms.

There are many ways that tapping into our energy bodies can aid our physical healing, and the science is catching up with what the mystics have always known about the link between emotional and physical health.
